The Insects That Actually Kill Bradenton Lawns

• Sod webworm. Night-feeding caterpillars. Chewed grass blades, small brown patches, especially in shaded or damp areas. Cosmetic damage rather than structural — recovers once treated.
• Armyworm. Big caterpillars, voracious. Can take out 10 to 15 feet of lawn in a couple of nights during outbreak years. Peaks late summer through fall.
• White grubs. Beetle larvae in the soil. Feed on grass roots, so turf pulls up like a carpet with no root attachment. Usually shows up in late summer.
• Mole crickets. Mostly a Bahia problem. Tunnel below the surface, push up small soil mounds, disrupt roots. Heavy in east Bradenton and inland lots.

How We Diagnose Before We Treat

1. Damage pattern. Spreading outward in sun = chinch. Random chewed blades = sod webworm. Large overnight loss = armyworm. Carpet-lifts-off-the-ground = grubs. Surface mounds = mole cricket.
2. Insect hunt. Chinch bugs live at the thatch line — we pull back the grass at the edge of a patch. Sod webworm adults (moths) flutter up at dusk. Armyworm larvae are visible on the blades. Grubs need a shovel cut to confirm.
3. Product match. Different insects need different insecticide chemistry and rate. Chinch bug material won’t touch grubs. Grub material won’t touch armyworm. We match the product to the ID.
4. Recovery plan. Treatment alone doesn’t bring back dead turf. We set up fertilization and watering guidance to accelerate recovery, and for severe cases flag whether plugging or re-sod is needed.

Preventive vs. Curative
